Effect of the Grain Boundaries on the Bending Cyclic Behavior of the Aluminum Bicrystals

Ken ATAGI and Yoshihiro OKUMOTO

Abstract:In order to examine the effect of grain boundaries on bending cyclic behavior, aluminum bicrystals and their component crystals (A and B) were investigated under the constant strain amplitude of 0.13% at room temperature. Bending moments of the bicrystals were compared with mixture models which were calculated by joining results of component single crystals. The cyclic saturation moments at 1000 cycles of the bicrystals were higher than those of thecalculated ones. It was suggested that the existence of the grain boundaries possibly shortened the fatigue lives in aluminum bicrystals.
